Karwa Chauth is the festival that celebrates the love between husband and wife! There’s a beauty in the belief that keeping on fast during Karwa Chauth will give a happy, prosperous and long life to husbands. Sargi is the custom in which the Mother-in-law sends food items and other items of Suhag for her Bahu. As per the rituals women are supposed to eat this Sargi before the Sunrise. This is actually done so that the fasting women could get some energy from this, for the whole day.

Mehandi

Every fasting woman would put Mehandi on both her palm on this day! The Mehandiwala Bhaias see a flock of crowd of women waiting in cues to get their palm done with Mehandi. There isn’t exactly any story behind this ritual, but its considered as symbol of a long-lasting husband-wife relationship and that is why the custom is included in Karwa Chauth celebration.

Dressing up in Red

In India red color is believed to be the symbol of a happy and prosperous married life. In typical words it is considered as the symbol of “Suhaag”, and that is why women on this day dress up in red Sari, wear red Bindi, bangles and everything in red. At the time of the marriage also, the bride is supposed to wear red lehenga, because that is believed to be auspicious for the occasion.

Waiting for the Moon

As per the custom, the fasting women can eat only after seeing the Moon in the sky! After keeping on fast for the whole day, women get together in flocks and they wait for the Moon in the sky. It’s a beautiful spectacle women together dressed beautifully like brides waiting for the Moon.

Some special food is cooked on the day of Karwa Chauth! Pidukia, Puria, Kheer, and many other items are cooked on Karwa Chauth. Sargi is also delicious and the food is prepared by the family, for the fasting women, is also delicious.

Looking through the Sieve

The custom of looking through the sieve is the most special customs of the festive celebration. When the Moon shows up in the sky, women see the Moon through the sieve first and then see their husband’s face. And, then they do away with their fast by drinking water from their husband’s hand.

The tradition of Husbands Gifting to Wives

While the wives keep on fast for the entire day with the conviction of getting the blessing of God, husbands gifts beautiful gifts for their wives. Women particularly like getting surprises from their husband, and gifts like Jewelleries, Sarees, diamond ring and makeup kit are some of the most loved gifts.
